Sneak Peek: Outback Critters, Happy Hamsters & 2 New Fence Dies

Hello and welcome to day 4 of our Summer Peek Week!  All this week I am showcasing cards using our newest collection which will be available for purchase tomorrow morning.

Card No. 1: Today's share is all about adorable critters and I'm starting things off with our new Outback Critters Stamps, which includes 2 parrots, 2 koalas, 2 crocodiles, a Kangaroo with her baby, a wombat, and an emu. I wanted to use a little bit of each on this card so I pulled out our Staggered Circle Dies for a fun slimline card which I created by elongating our Frilly Frames Retro Petals Dies (by hanging the die off my platform and running it through my die-cutting machine twice to cut each side).

I backed each circle with prints from our Classic Gingham Paper & Gingham Jewel Tones Paper packs and then used the three little leaf stamps from the set to stamp a scattered pattern across my card just to give it a little extra interest using Gina K. Kraft ink.

Card No. 2: My next card spotlight's the two crocodiles from the Outback Critters Stamps, pairing them with the island and vines from our Tropical Scenes stamps.  For my background I inked up a panel with Tumbled Glass distress ink and then splattered it with water. I then repeated the process on a second strip of paper using Peacock Feathers distress ink.  I then die-cut each of them separately with our Frilly Frames Hexagon Die and then layered them together to from my sky and water. I should point out when inking my sky I also die-cut masks using our Fluffy Cloud dies, but with the water droplets and everything else going on, they sort of get lost in the mix. I then mounted everything onto a green diamond print from our Classic Sunburst Paper pack.

For my punny birthday greeting I heat embossed the words "snappy birthday" from the set using VersaMark Ink and Hero Arts Detail White Embossing powder. A few scattered rhinestones from our Blue Topaz Jewels & Aquamarine Jewels completed off my card.

Card No. 3: Up next is a card showcasing the two adorable koalas from the
Outback Critters set. The one koala comes hugging a tree branch so I was tickled when I realized I could make it look like he was in the tree from our Happy Harvest Stamps. I just trimmed off the white end left by the dies so that it could blend with my other coloring.

To create the rest of the scene behind him, I inked up a white cardstock panel in Tumbled Glass distress reusing those same Fluffy Clouds masks I had cut for my last card. I trimmed down my panel using our Frilly Frames Retro Petals dies and then cut a couple more clouds from white cardstock so I could layer them over the top for extra depth and interest. I also tucked a set of mountains in the background from our Spring Scenes Stamps and a little butterfly from our Spring Showers set.

This card also introduces our new Picket Fence Dies which come with the basic fence as a single piece, but also includes a separate die that cuts additional slats that are embossed with a woodgrain texture and little nail heads so when layered over the main fence it looks really three-dimensional. This die also comes with a straight grass border that measures 6-3/8" long which I love because when I cut a bunch of grassy layers, I can staggered them a bit so they don't look like they were all lined up identically.

I completed my card with a punny sentiment from the set that actually allows you to personalize the greeting for so many different people. You not only have the friend option I used here, but you can have your card be for a mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, granddaughter, grandson, son, daughter or sister. Sorry brothers. I ran out of space.  ;)

Card No. 4:
For my last Outback Critters Card, I wanted to have the crocodile eyeing the parrots on a tree branch and then as I got started playing with the pieces I had colored, I thought it would be really fun to create an sky, land and sea card pulling from a bunch of different sets.

Working from the top down, for the sky portion of my scene I started by die-cutting the cloud print from our Summer Splash Paper pack using our Slimline Scalloped Frame Dies. I layered two of the tree branches from the outback critter set and then hid th
e fact that they were a bit too small to stretch across my card by layering in some palm leaves from our Fabulous Flamingos Stamps. For the land portion, I cut my sand from kraft cardstock using the curve of our hillside dies from our Slimline Nature Border Dies and then stippled my sand texture using my Copic markers.

For the waves of my sea I cut the top of my blue print paper from that same Summer Splash Paper pack using our Stitched Scallop Dies. For my ocean scene, I used a portion of the coral border from our Tropical Scenes Stamps and the crabs and fish from our Best Fishes Stamps. The finished size of my card is 3.5" x 8.5". Such a fun one to create!

Card No. 5: Switching gears, my next set of cards feature another cute critter set called Happy Hamsters. For this card, I wanted to create the look that my hamsters were in a cage (ignore the fact that my scale is so large that they wouldn't even have to wiggle through the bars to escape--this thought didn't even occur to me until I was literally editing my photo, but I'm kind of happy it worked out that way because it might have turned out looking a bit too busy otherwise).

I started by hand drawing an a pile of straw starting with my lightest Copic Marker in YR30 and gradually flicking in YR31, YR21, YR23 & YR27.  As the color started to build up, I also helped it along by sponging on some Tea Dye distress inks along the bottom.  I then masked off my straw and lightly sponged on some Tumbled Glass distress ink for my background. Keeping my mask in place I then took a clear ruler and lightly marked oft my card in 3/4" sections across the width and 1" sections vertically. I then used that ruler with my C5, C3 & C1 Copic Markers to draw lines when overlapped started to blend together. When drawing the vertical bars I tried my best to pick up my pen and not draw through the horizontal bar so it would look more realistic like the wires were crossing over.

When I was done, I removed my mask and die-cut my panel down using our Stitched Rectangle Dies and mounted my background onto the red striped paper from our Sleek Stripes Paper pack. I wanted to give my hamsters a little nest to sleep in like hamster love in real life so I converted the dog house from our Puppy Parents set into a hamster house by covering the paw print with a heart from the Happy Hamsters set. I finished my card with a punny greeting from the set which I stamped onto a speech bubble from our Comic Strip Speech Bubble Dies.

Card No. 6: Up next is a card with the Happy Hamster Stamps and Picket Fence Dies cut out in white.  I started by stamping my hilly fir tree scene in the top portion of my white cardstock panel using our Scenic Route Stamps. I then inked up the sky with Tumbled Glass distress ink. It's ok to ink over the grass because it's really easy to hide the pale blue ink in the next step.  I then created a simple mask by stamping the same border onto masking material which I fussy cut with my scissors. I didn't take any care to cut around the trees. I just cut right through them and only focused on masking off the hills because I knew my copic markers could disguise the tree tops and white where they hadn't been inked with the Twisted Citron and Mowed Lawn I used for my grass.  As a final step, I colored my trees with Copic markers.

To create my scene in the foreground, I used the tree stump from our Foxy Christmas set and the sunflower from Happy Harvest, sprinkling some Clay Flower Confetti in for my flowers in the grass. I didn't want to leave the open hole for the flowers though so I dropped a little clear seed bead in the center of each one since I already had a little liquid adhesive in there to hold it in place. A sentiment from our Devoted Doggies Stamps stamped with Versafine Onyx Black Ink was the final touch.

Card No. 7: This next card utilizes our new Scalloped Fence dies!  This tiny die packs a big punch. It comes with just a single fence panel and all the layering pieces you need to make it look three-dimensional in a single flat die (hooray for not having any little die pieces to lose). The beauty of having it just be a single panel is of course the lower cost, but also it give you the flexibility to link 4 or 5 panels together to work for slimline cards as well.  For this card I obviously used three panels which have been perfectly sized to span the width of a 5.5" wide A2 card.

For my scene, I used the grass border from our new Picket Fence Dies. I was going to toss the negative space, but then I realized it wasn't all that different that the positive portion and I could layer the two together for a bit more texture and dimension. Hooray for rescuing a scrap from the trash! I stamped the other patches of grass using the two little grass images from our Spring Scenes Stamps. The Happy Hamster Stamps come with a peanut so I thought it would be fun to put my little guy on a pile of peanuts. For my greeting I heat embossed the words "hi cutie" from the Happy Hamsters set onto a red pennant cut using our Fishtail Banner Dies from Classic Gingham Paper.
Sunny Studio: Hamsters with Peanut Pile Card (using Happy Hamsters Stamps, Picket Fence Dies, Scalloped Fence Dies & Fishtail Banner Dies)

Card No. 8: My last card of the day shows the Scalloped Fence dies on a vertical card. I could have done a better job at centering them on my card, but in the end I decided it was more important for my birdhouses to be centered and so I offset my fence so I could still enjoy the 3 cute little fence posts which are my favorite part.

For this card, I started by cutting the cloud border from masking material using our Slimline Nature Border Dies. I then staggered them with each layer I inked up using Spun Sugar distress ink.  There's just something so happy about pink cloud, right? For my focal point images I used the stamps from our A Bird's Life Stamps.  It had been such a long time since I had a chance to play with these so I was so excited these new fence dies gave me the perfect excuse to pull them out. I love that I could make the chubby bird walk to fence line. I also really wanted to tuck in the nest in the curve of the fence, but I just ran out of space for this particular card. Next time...

For my grass (colored with Twisted Citron distress ink), I once again layered the grass borders from the Picket Fence die and then repeatedly stamped the little tufts using our Barnyard Buddies Stamps. I then scattered some flowers in the grass from the A Bird's Life set.

  38. I am so happy I could just cry!!! Yesterday we had the gumballs and today my beloved WOMBATS! They don't get the exposure and respect that they deserve. During the fires in AU they were real heroes and saved many animals by allowing them into their burrows while the fires past over. They are a koala's closest relative, are exceptional mothers, have biofluorescent fur and poop cubes! And that is just a few things that make them so special. My dear friend Nelly Kelly has been rescuing and caring for them for years on her own dime and her own time and the one she loves the most is named GUMBALLS! She has raised him since he was a tiny baby and his mother died. She even sleeps outside in the summer to spend as much time with him as possible. Now I can make the gumballs card from yesterday but with a wombat! You are very close to me and it is all I can do not to run over and beg for an early order. I am staying logged into my account and hitting refresh till these go on sale. I want my box to be the first one out the door. THANK YOU so very much :)
