Inspiration Week: Introducing A Bird's Life & Heartfelt Wishes

Are you ready?!  Today's the big day, but before you run off to shop make sure to check out this one last post with a couple more new products to showcase and drumroll please... A Video!  You just might be rewarded with a little promo code at the end too (hint-hint).  ;)

Up first we have a stamp set all about birdies called A Bird's Life.  I've been wanting to do some little birds for awhile now and as a graduate in interior design I'm always attracted to cute home themes (too bad my own home is such a mess right now).  ;)

When designing this set it was important to me to create a tree branch that could work facing either direction to expand the set's versatility.  For my card here I started by masking off some clouds on white cardstock using the dies from Rain or Shine and Sunny Sentiments and then inked over the panel using Mermaid dye ink with a jumbo dauber. To make my sentiment stand out I cut a strip of white cardstock, stitched the edge and stamped it in a color to match the birdhouse and birdies.

For my next card I used some polaroid frames from Doodlebug's Spring Things collection.  To fill the frames I inked up some white cardstock with tumbled glass along the outside edges before adding them behind the die-cuts.  I stamped my sentiment in the center with my favorite VersaFine Ink and then filled the frames with some of the sweet images from the set.  I finished off my card with a large scalloped border along the top and bottom using the new Stitched Scallop dies.

The birdhouses were designed to be used with one of two posts that come with the set or to hang by the strings and "tied" with a bow.  For my next card I used the posts to set my little scene borrowing the tuft of grass from our Easter Wishes set.  When I was done, my card felt a bit unfinished so I framed my scene using THIS die by Gina Marie designs.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of being a guest over on the Scrapbook & Cards Today blog where I shared this card and some different ways to use masking on your cardmaking.  I hope you will swing by to see my step-by-step photo tutorial over there.

The second new set I have to share is a small 3x4 sentiment set called Heartfelt Wishes which plays on different ways to use the word "wishes".  This versatile set works all year 'round covering a number of occasions like birthdays, weddings, get well greetings and even the winter holidays.

For my card with it here I used the small candle that comes in the set and adhered two together to elongate them so that they could peek from the top and bottom of my sentiment strip.  Before adhering them to my card base I laid them out to get a general idea about placement and then inked up behind them with a little foam dauber and Mustard Seed distress ink.  After I had glued them down with my zig glue pen I went back and added glossy accents to the flames.

For my other card with the set, I heat embossed the words "wedding wishes" on the diagonal spaced 1/2" apart.  I knew there was no way I was going to be able to keep things straight so I used my clear grid ruler to add some light pencil lines that I went back and erased afterwards. It can be hard to see where you've stamped when using VersaMark on white cardstock so I just worked line by line, heating up the powder before moving on to my next row.  After everything had been erased, I inked up the background with Spun Sugar and Shaded Lilac distress inks and the areas where I had embossed resisted the ink.

I decided to carry the colors onto my die-cut word so I inked up a scrap of cardstock with the same distress inks before cutting it out.  I finished off my sentiment strip by cutting one end with our fishtail banner dies.  When I was done my card felt like it could still use a bit of glitz and glamour so I added a trail of pink and iridescent sequins with some liquid adhesive.

Inspiration Week: Introducing Oceans of Joy & New Summer Freebie

Hello There!  We're on day four of our inspiration week with less than 24 hours from the big release (items usually hit our online store at approximately 3am PST).

I'm so happy to finally introduce you to our Oceans of Joy stamps & coordinating dies today.  It's a wonderful set that really compliments the two previously shared sets, but it also is pretty fun all on it's own.  It's sort of random, but the set includes a new smaller balloon and string that I'm super excited to finally have to mix and match with all of our other sets.

For my first card I created a birthday card using that balloon with a bunch of the different fish and bubbles from the set (along with a borrowed birthday hat from our Froggy Friends stamps).  I also used the new sandy beach border image which spans the length of the set.  With the vertical orientation of my card I was able to stamp it twice and offset them so that they each featured a different part of the border to keep things interesting.  Once I had everything stamped, colored and adhered, I added some glossy accents to my balloons and bubbles to make them shiny.

For my next card I used our Stitched Scallop Border dies to create my waves drawing inspiration from a sweet card by Laura Bassen shared HERE.  I loved how she highlighted the edge of her dies by inking on the layer below so I inked on the bottom portion of each wave using all of the cool blue & turquoise distress inks in my stash from cracked pistachio to chipped sapphire.   I then tucked my whale in one of the waves, cutting his flipper so that it could hang out and finished the visual circle with the dolphin and sea turtle.  After I stamped my sentiment with my mini misti (I wasn't about to mess up all my hard work) it still felt a bit empty so I added some sparkle using my favorite mix of Crystal Reflections sequins from Simon Says Stamp.

For my next card I had fun creating a border of what my daughter lovingly refers to as goldfish crackers.  My ocean background was achieved by brushing on layers of different blue & aqua using my Gansai Tambi watercolors with Arches Cold Press Watercolour paper and a large paintbrush.

My last Ocean themed card of the day features a fun masking and embossing technique. Today I'm excited to be a guest over on the Scrapbook & Cards Today blog where I am sharing several cards including this one with more details about masking techniques.  I hope you will hop on over to visit them. ;)

These little guys are kind of "fun" to fussy cut out so once again I used my tip for coloring the inside portions with a marker to blend with the background. I love how they're able to hold hands though (or maybe that should be holding legs).  Hee-hee.

For my vertical wavy stripes I inked on some tumbled glass and broken china distress ink and then stamped the wavy borders from our Island Getaway stamps.

Inspiration Week: Introducing Pirate Pals Stamps & Dies

Happy Wednesday!  Only two more days until release day!!! I'm so excited to be unveiling our new Pirate Pals set today.

Back in early January several of us on the Doodlebug design team were trying to guess what Doodlebug's new collection for Spring would be and several guessed Pirates.  It turned out to be Vikings with their darling Dragon Tales collection, but I couldn't get the idea of cute pirates out of my head and I thought they would be the perfect compliment to our more girly Magical Mermaids set shared yesterday.

For my first card I wanted to create a Silhouette of the pirate ship from the set so I started by blending Worn Lipstick and Mustard Seed distress inks on my card panel to form my sunset.  I then stamped the pirate ship over the top and colored it in with a black Copic marker using one of the new fine sketch nibs (oh my goodness I'm in love with it) and covered the bottom portion of my card front with a piece of black cardstock.  To set my little scene I borrowed the palm tree and island from our Island Getaway Stamps which I think are the perfect compliment to this set.  The little crab guy comes from tomorrow's sneak peek.  ;)

Up next is a playful card using one of the pirate guys holding a single red balloon.  I thought it would be fun to cut off the sword and make it look like the pirate was holding the balloon instead.  This would actually work well for both of the sword carrying pirates, but I loved how I could color him to match my red, black and white color scheme.  :)

For my background I alternated stamping the scull and crossbones stamp with the anchor using VersaMark ink and then heat embossed them with clear powder on my red cardstock.  It gives it a pretty cool velvety appearance in person.

Up next are three pirates hiding in barrels.  Don't ask me why.  I had this idea in my head from the beginning, but when my 11-year old daughter saw this card she thought it was pretty wacky.  I think perhaps I've ridden Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland one too many times with Johnny Depp peaking out from the barrel.

To ground my scene I borrowed some inspiration from the wonderfully talented Sandy Allnock and loosely sketched in some planks using my Copic Markers and a clear ruler.  I then used some post-it tape as a mask and inked up the bottom half with antique linen and the top half with tumbled glass distress inks, fading them out towards the edges of my card panel.

And that parrot on his head?  He's covering a boo-boo on my background, but I like to think of it as sort of a happy accident because in the end I like the splash of color he added and how he made my composition a bit more interesting--I only wish I had thought to mirror him so he was facing the other way.  ;)

My last card is sort of the day version of my first card.  I used the same palm tree and island from our Island Getaway set, this time also incorporating the wave stamps from that set for my ocean.  For my clouds, I used the dies from our Rain or Shine and Sunny Sentiments sets, cutting them from masking material and setting them on my white cardstock background before inking in my sky using Tumbled Glass distress ink. The parrot, treasure chest and coins complete my scene and help tie in my punny sentiment.

Inspiration Week: Introducing Magical Mermaids & Stitched Scallop Dies

Hello and welcome to day 2 as we countdown to our summer release day on Friday!  I'm super excited to officially introduce you to today's new products with our Magical Mermaids stamps and coordinating dies and a new standalone Stitched Scallop die set.

I had originally planned to go a different direction with our summer release, but a sweet customer at Creativation asked me to try my hand at creating a Mermaid set and while it felt daunting to try and do something with "people" it immediately started the wheels turning in my head.  I hope you enjoy them.  :)

Up first is a card I created using all three Mermaids from the set.  They are super fun to color and personalize with different skin tones and hair colors.  I found myself returning to some of my Pinterest boards repeatedly to figure out the right combination of markers.  ;)

For my background, I sponged on peacock feathers, salty ocean, and wilted violet distress inks and then used a Stampin' Up Blender pen to remove some of the color. After that, I came back with my White Sharpie Pen and Glossy Accents and created clear glossy bubbles over the top.  I was really pleased with the look and as a bit of a control freak, I liked having a way to play with removing the color that didn't require dropping random bits of water.  ;)

Up next is a card with one of my favorite analogous color schemes--I've always adored the way these colors look together.  I shocked myself, but I finally achieved a watercolor background that I actually liked.  I love how watercolors look, but I really struggle with them (I think it goes back to my perfectionist nature). However, after watching a free class over at Scrapbook.com I was feeling inspired to try some watercoloring again.  ;)

The Turtle and balloons are a preview of another set being shared on Thursday which I paired with the little critter trails from our Backyard Bugs stamps to use as balloon strings.  I added a touch of sparkle to the edge of each balloon using my Stardust Stickles.

For my next card, I created a scene with all the little companion images from the set including the seahorse and jellyfish.  Wanna know a secret?  When I fussy cut my images, I hardly ever cut out the insides like the jellyfish here.  I just came back with a coordinating color of Copic marker to give the optical illusion that I did.  Even in person, it's hard to tell that it wasn't cut out.  ;)

My next card features a fun shaker.  This project shows the other new product being showcased today which is our Stitched Scallop dies.  They are fun in that they are stitched on both sides of the cut line making them perfect for both ocean waves and a scalloped border.  With my shaker the only elements on the inside are the inked up background with the sentiment and sequins.  I then used 3M Spray Mount to adhere my stitched vellum waves over the top (using the same oval die-cut along the bottoms of them).

For my balloons I taped sewing thread to the back of each balloon and after I had them adhered to my card I pulled the strings into a tight knot which I glued to her hand with some liquid adhesive.

My last card of the day uses a sandy beach border stamp from that same set being showcased on Thursday.  ;)  I inked up my background using Spun Sugar distress ink and then came back with more of that same ink using all the hearts from our Color Me Happy stamps to create a custom background.  It came together really quickly and I love the results!

My ocean waves were designed by cutting a mask using our Wavy Border dies and then inking them up with tumbled glass distress ink.  I finished my scene by sitting the mermaid on a rock from the set along with some scattered seashells.

It's a bit hard to see, but I gave my card a sweet scalloped edge along the bottom using the new stitched scallop dies.  It was honestly hard figuring out which day to share these dies as I found myself using them on a lot of the cards I made for this release.  They're quickly becoming my new favorite and are so versatile with the two sizes and the ability to use both the negative and positive portions.  :)
